Today was the third day of our vacation in Poland.

오늘은 폴란드에서 보내는 휴가의 셋째 날이었다.

We headed for the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

우리는 비엘리치카 소금 광산으로 향했다.

That’s right! It is a salt mine, not a gold mine.

그렇다! 그것은 금광이 아니라 소금 광산이다.

Anyway, the Wieliczka mine is a famous tourist attraction because deep inside it are statues, galleries and churches — all made of salt!

어쨌든 비엘리치카 광산은 유명한 관광 명소인데, 왜냐하면 그 깊숙한 내부에는 모두 소금으로 만들어진 조각상들, 미술관들, 교회들이 있기 때문이다!

It is over 600 years old.

그것은 600년도 더 되었다.

Our guide told us that millions of years ago, there was a sea there.

가이드는 우리에게 수백만 년 전에는 그곳에 바다가 있었다고 말해 주었다.

How interesting!

We walked down more than 350 steps to enter the mine.

광산으로 들어가기 위해서 우리는 350개 이상의 계단을 내려갔다.

The air underground was cool and damp.

지하의 공기는 선선하고 습했다.

As we walked through the tunnels, I saw statues of Polish kings and queens.

우리가 터널을 따라 걸어갈 때 나는 폴란드 왕들과 왕비들의 조각상들을 보았다.

They looked just like real people!

그들은 꼭 실제 사람처럼 보였다!

I also saw beautiful paintings on the wall.

나는 또한 벽의 아름다운 그림들도 보았다.

Some of the caves were churches — yes, salt churches!

굴의 일부는 교회들이었다 - 그렇다, 소금 교회이다!

So who made all of these?

The miners did!

In the nineteenth century, miners spent nearly all day underground.

They wanted a place to pray, so they built churches inside the mine.

Nowadays there are 3.5 km of tunnels filled with beautiful salt attractions.

With floors, ceilings, walls, and even chandeliers made of salt, I felt like I was in a dream world.

바닥, 천장, 벽, 그리고 심지어 샹들리에까지 소금으로 만들어져서 나는 꿈나라에 온 것 같은 느낌이 들었다.

At the end of our tour, we were 327 meters underground.

관광을 마칠 때쯤 우리는 327 미터 지하에 있었다.

I think that was the deepest place I have ever been in my life.

내 생각에 그것이 내 평생에 있어본 곳 중 가장 깊은 곳이었던 것 같다.

To leave the mine, we took an elevator up.

광산을 떠나기 위해 우리는 엘리베이터를 타고 올라갔다.

The sunlight was too bright for my eyes, but I was glad to see it again.

햇빛이 내 눈에는 너무 밝았지만 그것을 다시 보게 되어 기뻤다.

Today, we can buy salt cheaply at the store.

오늘날, 우리는 소금을 가게에서 저렴하게 살 수 있다.

A long time ago, however, it was thought to be very valuable.

그러나, 오래전에 그것은 매우 귀하게 여겨졌다.

Salt not only makes food taste better and keeps our bodies healthy, but it also helps preserve food.

소금은 음식을 더 맛있게 하고, 우리 몸을 건강하게 유지해줄 뿐만 아니라 음식을 보존하는데도 도움을 준다.

Therefore, salt was much more important than it is today.

그러므로, 소금은 오늘날보다 훨씬 더 중요했다.

However, not all parts of the world had enough salt.

In these places, salt was such a valuable item that sometimes it was even used as money.

Actually, in ancient Rome, soldiers’ payment was salt.

실제로, 고대 로마에서는 군인의 봉급이 소금이었다.

This was known as salarium, and that’s where the word “salary” comes from.
