Every year starting on December 10th, International Human Rights Day, you can take part in the Global Write-a-thon.

매년 세계 인권 선언 기념일인 12월 10일을 시작으로 당신은 편지쓰기마라톤에 참가할 수 있다.

For one week, tens of thousands of people in more than thirty countries write letters to help free innocent prisoners around the world.

일주일 동안 30개 이상의 나라에서 수만 명의 사람들이 전 세계의 결백한 수감자들을 석방하는데 도움을 주기 위해 편지를 쓴다.

The event is organized by Amnesty International, a famous international human rights organization.

그 행사는 유명한 국제 인권 단체인 국제앰네스티에 의해 조직된다.

So, how can writing a letter free an innocent prisoner?

그렇다면, 편지를 쓰는 것이 어떻게 무고한 수감자들을 석방할 수 있는 걸까?

Well, the letters are sent to governments who have innocent prisoners in their jails.

자, 편지들은 그들의 감옥에 무고한 수감자들을 가두고 있는 정부들에게 보내진다.

Many such prisoners are lawyers or journalists who were put in jail for speaking out about human rights.

그런 수감자들 중 다수는 인권에 관해서 거리낌 없이 이야기한 것 때문에 감옥에 갇힌 변호사나 언론인들이다.

During Global Write-a-thon week, hundreds of thousands of letters are sent together.

편지쓰기마라톤 주간 동안 수십만 통의 편지가 함께 보내진다.

They all arrive at the same time, often in huge boxes.

그것들은 종종 커다란 상자에 담겨 모두 동시에 도착한다.

That way, the governments take notice of them!

Thanks to these letters, many prisoners have already been freed from jail.

Then choose a place such as a library or your school, and invite your friends and classmates to come together to write letters.

The Global Write-a-thon is a great chance to work together to protect human rights.

편지쓰기마라톤은 인권 보호를 위해 함께 일할 수 있는 훌륭한 기회이다.

I am writing to express how worried I am about Susan Smith.

저는 수잔 스미스에 대해 제가 얼마나 걱정하고 있는지 알려드리기 위해 편지를 쓰고 있습니다.

She is a 28-year old journalist who is in jail now in your country.

그녀는 지금 당신의 나라 감옥에 수감되어 있는 28세의 기자입니다.

In October 2015, she was arrested for writing a newspaper article about human rights.

2015년 10월에 그녀는 인권에 관한 신문 기사를 썼다는 이유로 체포되었습니다.

After being arrested, she was sent straight to jail without a trial.

체포된 이후에 그녀는 재판을 받지 않은 채 곧바로 감옥으로 보내졌습니다.

However, writing articles about human rights is not against the law.

Amnesty International believes that Susan Smith should not be in jail.

She has already been there for three years.

What’s more, Amnesty International found out that she has not been treated properly in jail.

For example, her family has not been allowed to visit her.
