My name is Greg and I am a weather scientist.

제 이름은 그레그이고 저는 기상학자입니다.

For six months of the year, my team and I live here at the weather station.

연간 6개월 동안 저의 팀과 저는 이곳 기상 관측소에서 생활합니다.

Our job is to observe the Antarctic weather and use that information to study how the climate will change in the future.

우리의 임무는 남극의 날씨를 관찰하고 기후가 앞으로 어떻게 바뀔지 연구하기 위해 그 정보를 이용하는 것입니다.

My day starts at 7 am.

저의 하루는 오전 7시에 시작됩니다.

It is still dark when I wake up.

In fact, it stays dark all day, because the sun never rises here in the winter.

사실 이곳은 겨울에 해가 전혀 뜨지 않기 때문에 하루 종일 어두운 상태입니다.

And in the summer, the sun never sets.

After a quick shower and breakfast, I put on my snowsuit.

Then I walk to the research building.

It is beside the ocean, so I often see families of fur seals and penguins on the beach.

I take measurements there every three hours until 3 pm.

My favorite job is launching the weather balloon.

I fill it with helium and send it into the sky.

The weather balloon has special equipment.

It measures air temperature and wind speed.

In the evenings, we read books, talk or watch movies.

However, on some nights we get a special treat: the auroras.

When these appear, we see beautiful orange, white and green light in the night sky.

I think the South Pole is the most beautiful place on earth.

And my job never gets boring on the icy continent of Antarctica.

The North and South Poles are quiet, beautiful places.

북극과 남극은 조용하고 아름다운 곳이다.

They are so cold that few people or animals live there.

그곳은 너무나 추워서 사람들과 동물들이 거의 살지 않는다.

Both poles are rich in natural oil, gas and minerals.

두 극지방 모두 천연 석유와 가스 및 광물이 풍부하다.

So who owns them?

그렇다면 누가 그곳을 소유하고 있을까?

Actually, there is an international agreement that no country can own the poles.

사실, 어느 나라도 극지방을 소유할 수 없다는 국제 조약이 있다.

Instead, countries are allowed to have research stations there.

그 대신, 국가들은 그곳에 연구 기지를 갖는 것이 허용되어 있다.

Today, a total of 30 countries have research stations at the poles.

오늘날 총 30개의 국가가 극지방에 연구 기지를 가지고 있다.

Thousands of scientists study the weather and wildlife there.

수천 명의 과학자들이 그곳에서 날씨와 야생 생물을 연구한다.

They can carry out any research they like, but all of them have to follow one strict rule:

They must not leave any waste or pollution or do anything else to damage the beautiful polar environment.
