Bees are amazing honey makers.

벌은 놀라운 꿀 제조자이다.

But they are also impressive honeycomb builders.

하지만 그들은 인상적인 벌집 건축가이기도 하다.

To build a honeycomb, bees gradually make cells from a special wax that they produce from their bodies.

벌집을 짓기 위해 벌은 그들의 몸에서 만들어내는 특별한 왁스로 서서히 벌집 칸들을 만들어간다.

The wax is hard to produce, so they must use it efficiently.

그 왁스는 만들기 어렵기 때문에, 그들은 그것을 효율적으로 사용해야 한다.

Therefore, honeycomb cells must fit perfectly together.

그러므로, 벌집 칸은 서로 완벽하게 딱 들어맞아야 한다.

Circles are not a good shape for cells because they don’t fit together.

원형은 서로 딱 들어맞지 않기 때문에 벌집 칸으로 좋은 형태가 아니다.

As gaps are left between them, wax is wasted.

그것들 사이에 틈이 남게 되므로 왁스가 낭비된다.

The shapes that fit together without leaving spaces are the triangle, the square, and the hexagon.

공간을 남기지 않고 서로 딱 들어맞는 모양은 삼각형, 정사각형 그리고 육각형이다.

Bees choose the hexagon, but why?

벌은 육각형을 선택하는데, 왜일까?

The hexagon, a six-sided shape, is the most efficient one for storing honey.

여섯 면의 도형인 육각형은 꿀을 저장하는 데 가장 효율적인 것이다.

A hexagon fits perfectly together with other hexagons, and it is very strong.

육각형은 다른 육각형들과 완벽하게 서로 딱 들어맞고, 아주 견고하다.

But most importantly, it stores the greatest amount of honey with the least amount of wax.

하지만 가장 중요한 것은 그것이 가장 적은 양의 왁스를 가지고 가장 많은 양의 꿀을 저장한다는 점이다.

That’s because compared to other shapes, the hexagon uses the smallest perimeter to cover the same area.

그것은 다른 형태들과 비교했을 때, 육각형이 같은 면적을 둘러싸기 위해 최소한의 둘레를 사용하기 때문이다.

It seems that bees are not only good at making honey.

벌은 단지 꿀을 만드는 데만 능숙한 게 아닌 듯하다.

They are also good at mathematics!
