What strange pictures!

얼마나 이상한 그림들인가!

They seem to be moving, don’t they?

그것들은 움직이고 있는 것처럼 보인다, 그렇지 않은가?

But that is impossible.

하지만 그것은 불가능하다.

They are just fooling your eyes!

그것들은 단지 당신의 눈을 속이고 있을 뿐이다!

How can this happen?

어떻게 이것이 발생할 수 있는가?

Actually, it is just a trick called an optical illusion.

사실, 그것은 단지 착시라고 불리는 속임수이다.

This kind of art is called op art, which is short for optical art.

이런 종류의 예술은 옵아트라고 불리는데, 그것은 옵티컬 아트의 줄임말이다.

Optical illusions trick the brain into seeing things differently from the way they really are.

착시는 뇌를 속여서 사물들을 실제 모습과 다르게 보게 한다.

To make optical illusions, artists use contrasting colors, the repetition of simple forms, and the rules of perspective.

착시를 일으키기 위해, 예술가들은 대조적인 색상과 단순한 형태의 반복, 원근법의 규칙들을 사용한다.

Op art paintings appear to glow, twist, or move.

옵아트 그림들은 빛나거나 휘거나 또는 움직이는 것처럼 보인다.

Some paintings even seem to show hidden images.

몇몇 그림들은 심지어 숨겨진 이미지들을 보여 주는 것처럼 보인다.

This art form was first introduced in 1965 at an exhibition called “The Responsive Eye” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

이 예술 형식은 1965년에 뉴욕 현대 미술관에서 ‘응답하는 눈’이라고 불리는 전시회에서 처음 소개되었다.

Critics thought these works were nothing more than visual tricks.

However, the public loved them and thought they were very fun.

Today op art is found in many places, such as TV advertisements and fashion designs.

In 17th and 18th century Europe, some wealthy women had dollhouses which looked exactly like real homes but were smaller.

They were up to two meters tall and open on one side.

In modern times, these luxurious dollhouses have turned out to have historical value as well.

Some of these dollhouses have special rooms that only existed inside of very old European houses.
