The lyrics of your favorite songs can teach you many useful expressions, including similes and metaphors.

Similes compare things using like or as.

직유는 like나 as를 사용하여 대상을 비유한다.

The song “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes contains this simile:

Shawn Mendes의 노래 ‘Stitches’에 이런 직유가 들어 있다.

Just like a moth drawn to a flame / Oh, you lured me in, I couldn’t sense the pain.

불꽃에 이끌리는 한 마리 나방처럼 / 오, 그대는 나를 유혹했죠, 나는 고통을 느끼지 못했어요.

The singer is comparing himself to a moth because he is attracted to someone in the same way that a moth is attracted to a flame.

수는 나방이 불꽃에 끌리는 것과 같은 방식으로 자신이 누군가에 끌리기 때문에 그 자신을 나방에 비유하고 있다.

Metaphors compare things without like or as.

은유는 like나 as 없이 대상을 비유한다.

For example, someone might say, “This room is a refrigerator.”

예를 들어, 누군가는 “이 방은 냉장고예요.”라고 말할지도 모른다.

However, it’s not really a refrigerator!

The person is just saying the room is very cold.
