Nowadays, we rely on plastic to make many things, including bottles, pens, and bags.

Unfortunately, plastic is polluting our oceans.

And now a new type of plastic trash called microbeads is making the situation even worse.

Microbeads are a type of microplastic.

They are plastic beads that are even smaller than sand.

These microbeads are used in health care products and cosmetics we use every day, such as shampoo, face scrubs, and toothpastes.

이러한 마이크로비즈는 샴푸, 얼굴 스크럽제와 치약과 같이 우리가 매일 사용하는 건강 관리 제품이나 화장품에 사용된다.

Because these products are washed down drains and into the sewer system, the microbeads get into our rivers and oceans.

이런 제품들은 배수관으로 씻겨 내려가 하수도로 들어가기 때문에 마이크로비즈가 강과 바다로 들어가게 된다.

This is a problem because microbeads carry harmful chemicals.

이는 마이크로비즈가 유해한 화학물질을 지니고 있기 때문에 문제이다.

When sea creatures eat the microbeads, the toxic chemicals build up and are passed up the food chain.

해양 생물들이 마이크로비즈를 먹으면 독성 화학물질이 축적되고 먹이사슬을 따라 전해진다.

These chemicals might even be found in some of the seafood we eat.

We need to reduce the amount of microbeads in marine habitats.

One thing we can do is buy products more wisely.

For example, we can buy organic toothpaste and use sugar as a natural skin scrub.

Our consumer society creates tons of throwaway packaging.

Even with recycling, too much packaging ends up in landfills.

One way to change this is by using “plantable packaging!”

An American student named Alex Henige came up with the clever idea.

He created the first plantable coffee cup!

The cup is made of material that easily breaks down.

And there are seeds in the walls of the cup.

그리고 컵의 벽면에는 씨앗들이 있다.

When you finish drinking the coffee, you just soak the cup in water and then plant it.

커피를 다 마시면 그저 컵을 물에 담그고 그런 다음 그것을 심기만 하면 된다.

After a few weeks, the seeds will start to grow into different flowers or even trees!

The cup itself will completely break down in the soil within about six months.

Henige hopes his idea will help reduce the amount of waste we produce in our daily lives.

After regular paper cups are used, they are sent to landfills with other garbage.
