Smoke detectors, MRI and running shoes — what do all these inventions have in common?

It may sound strange, but they were all made possible by space research.

NASA does research to create new technologies and products for their space program.

But this research also creates products we can use on Earth.

One example is smoke detectors.

They were first used in the space station in 1973 to detect any dangerous gases.

Some people say NASA spends too much money on its space research.

And it’s true that its research costs billions of dollars every year.

But NASA’s work doesn’t just stay in space.

Here are two students’ opinions on space research.

Some people say we can get useful resources from space.

But there are resources here on Earth that aren’t used enough yet.

José: Most importantly, humans must plan for the future.

After many years, Earth may become too hot and too crowded to live on.

So we should keep using space research to look for other places to live in space.

Also, curiosity is the start of all science.

Without it, we might still be living in caves!

You can find prairie dogs almost everywhere in North America.

We are very social and live in large groups of a few families.

Aren’t you curious about why we are called prairie dogs?

First, a prairie is a large area of flat, grassy land.

That’s where we live.

Second, we are called dogs because of the barking sound we make.

So why do we bark?

Well, we have many predators, such as eagles and coyotes.

When we feel danger from them, we bark loudly to warn our family and friends.

You can imagine how important our barking sound is.

You may not believe me, but we make different sounds for different levels of danger.

Prairie dogs live underground.

Their homes are made up of many tunnels and rooms.

Each room has a different purpose.

There is also a special room near the entrance.

Prairie dogs go there to listen and find out if dangerous animals are nearby.

Sometimes other animals, such as owls and snakes, move into these homes and share them with the prairie dogs.

But it also has an important cultural value.

Most art museums don’t want visitors to use the camera flash when they take pictures.

This is the problem faced by Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru.
