Monkeys are like people in many ways.

원숭이들은 많은 면에서 사람들과 비슷하다.

In fact, some of them even go to college!

사실 그들 중 일부는 심지어 대학에도 간다!

The Monkey College in Boston, Massachusetts, teaches the animals to become personal helpers for disabled people.

매사추세츠주의 보스턴에 있는 ‘원숭이 대학’은 동물들을 가르쳐 장애인들의 개인 도우미가 되도록 하고 있다.

They chose capuchin monkeys to be their “students” for a few reasons.

그들은 몇 가지 이유로 꼬리감는원숭이를 선택하여 그들의 ‘학생’이 되게 했다.

Firstly, they are very small but have a large brain.

첫째, 그들은 아주 작지만 큰 뇌를 가지고 있다.

This makes them very smart.

And they have very short tails.

So, unlike other monkeys, they use their hands just like people do.

In addition, these monkeys can live for up to 40 years and get along well with humans.

The monkeys at the college begin their training when they are only a few months old.

이 대학의 원숭이들은 불과 몇 개월 밖에 안 되었을 때 훈련을 시작한다.

They start to learn simple tasks such as bringing food or picking things up.

그들은 음식 가져오기나 물건 집기와 같은 간단한 과제들을 배우기 시작한다.

The training center is like a real house, with a microwave, a TV, and other household items.

훈련 센터는 전자레인지, TV 그리고 다른 가정 용품들을 갖춘 실제 집과 같다.

After several years of training, when the monkeys can perform more complicated tasks, they “graduate.”

몇 년간의 훈련을 받은 후 원숭이들이 보다 더 복잡한 과제들을 수행할 수 있을 때에 그들은 ‘졸업한다.’

As every monkey has different talents, they are carefully matched with their new owners.

모든 원숭이는 다른 재능을 갖고 있기 때문에 그들은 새 주인들과 신중하게 짝 지어진다.

So far, the results have been fantastic.

Most owners say their monkeys are not just helpers but also good friends.

Becky Thompson lost the use of her arms and legs in an accident.

But on March 14th there’s an answer: white.

White Day was started in the 1980s by candy companies in Japan.

It comes one month after Valentine’s Day.

The day was first named Marshmallow Day after the soft, white candy.

It is a day for girls to get candy from boys.

Now it is also a popular day in Taiwan and Korea.

Valentine’s Day in Western countries is a day for both boys and girls to give and to get chocolate or candy.

서양 국가에서 밸런타인데이는 소년과 소녀 모두가 초콜릿이나 사탕을 주고받는 날이다.

In Asia, however, only boys get chocolate on Valentine’s Day.

그러나 아시아에서는 오직 소년들만 밸런타인데이에 초콜릿을 받는다.

In other words, February 14th is for boys and March 14th is for girls.

다시 말해, 2월 14일은 소년을 위한 날이고 3월 14일은 소녀를 위한 날인 것이다.

White Day was made to give the boys a chance to thank the girls.

화이트 데이는 소년들이 소녀들에게 감사 표시를 할 기회를 주기 위해 만들어졌다.

However, some people dislike White Day.

그러나 어떤 사람들은 화이트 데이를 싫어한다.

They think it’s too commercial!

By creating a new tradition, the candy companies make teens spend money on their products.

Girls now expect to get expensive gifts from boys.

Despite this argument, White Day is still very popular.

“Hallmark holidays” are holidays which were created to sell something.

Unlike traditional holidays, such as Christmas or Thanksgiving, Hallmark holidays have no religious or historical background.

크리스마스나 추수감사절 같은 전통적 기념일과 달리 홀마크 기념일에는 종교적이거나 역사적인 배경이 없다.

The name comes from an American company called Hallmark Cards.

그 이름은 홀마크 카드라고 불리는 미국의 한 회사에서 온 것이다.

Hallmark Cards sells holiday greeting cards and gifts.

홀마크 카드는 기념일 축하 카드와 선물을 판매한다.

Some holidays considered Hallmark holidays are Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

홀마크 기념일로 여겨지는 몇몇 기념일은 밸런타인데이, 어머니의 날 그리고 아버지의 날이다.

Hallmark Cards sells millions of cards on these holidays each year.

홀마크 카드는 매년 이러한 기념일에 수백만 장의 카드를 판매한다.

Lately, Grandparent’s Day and Boss’s Day were also created.

최근에는 조부모의 날과 상사의 날도 생겨났다.

However, these holidays are not popular with Americans.

그러나 이 기념일들은 미국인들에게 인기가 없다.

They are getting tired of buying greeting cards!

그들은 축하 카드 사는 것에 싫증이 나고 있다!

Everyone warns teens to watch out for peer pressure.

누구나 십대들에게 또래압력을 주의하라고 경고한다.

But what is peer pressure?

그러나 또래압력이란 무엇인가?

Your peers are your friends.

당신의 또래는 당신의 친구들이다.

As you get older, you spend more time with your friends and less time with your family.

당신은 커갈수록 친구들과는 더 많은 시간을 보내고 가족과는 더 적은 시간을 보낸다.

As a result, you start to think like your friends.

그 결과 당신은 당신의 친구들처럼 생각하기 시작한다.

You may even feel pressure to behave like them.

당신은 심지어 그들처럼 행동해야 할 것 같은 압박을 느낄 수도 있다.

This is peer pressure.

이것이 또래압력이다.

Peer pressure isn’t always bad.

또래압력이 항상 나쁜 것만은 아니다.

For example, your friends may be great students.

They can pressure you to be a good student too.

그들은 당신 또한 좋은 학생이 되도록 압박을 줄 수 있다.

Peer pressure is only bad if the group’s behavior is bad.

Some people have friends who like to cheat on exams.

어떤 사람들에게는 시험에서 부정행위 하기를 좋아하는 친구들이 있다.

If your friends pressure you to cheat, this is considered negative peer pressure.

만일 당신의 친구들이 당신에게 부정행위를 하라고 압박을 한다면 이것은 부정적인 또래압력으로 여겨진다.

There are ways to fight back against negative peer pressure.

부정적인 또래압력에 맞서는 방법들이 있다.

First, know your beliefs.

첫째, 당신의 신념을 알고 있어라.

Remind yourself that you think cheating is wrong.

스스로에게 당신은 부정행위는 잘못된 것이라고 생각한다는 것을 상기시켜라.

Then, if your friends pressure you to start cheating on exams, tell them it’s against your beliefs.

Next, you can try to create your own peer pressure.

In this way, you can create positive peer pressure among your friends.

Actually, there is a great person to talk to about your difficulties — a school counselor.

Because counselors have special training, they can help you handle your problems and make decisions.

상담사들은 특별훈련을 받기 때문에 당신이 문제를 처리하고 결정을 내리는 것을 도와줄 수 있다.

If you feel peer pressure, for example, you can get some ideas on how to deal with it.

예를 들어, 만일 당신이 또래압력을 느끼고 있다면 그것을 어떻게 다뤄야 하는지에 대한 몇몇 아이디어를 얻을 수 있다.

In fact, school counselors can help students handle almost any problem, from studying to planning for the future.

사실 학교 상담사들은 학생들이 공부하는 것에서부터 미래에 대한 계획을 세우는 것까지 거의 어떤 문제도 처리할 수 있도록 도움을 줄 수 있다.
