엄마 아빠께

I am traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

저는 시베리아 횡단 철도를 따라 여행 중이에요.

It is the longest train system in the world.

그것은 세계에서 제일 긴 열차 시스템이에요.

It has several routes, but I’m riding on the line that goes from Moscow to Vladivostok.

몇몇 노선이 있지만, 저는 모스크바에서 블라디보스토크로 가는 노선을 타고 있어요.

The journey is about 9,300 km long and takes eight days — that means I am covering about one fourth of the Earth from west to east!

Today is the sixth day of my journey.

Being on the train never gets boring.

Most of the passengers are from Russia or China.

We share our food and enjoy the beautiful views together.

At night we sleep in our little beds.

For days we traveled through Siberia.

며칠 동안 우리는 시베리아를 통과했어요.

Two days ago I got off the train to visit Lake Baikal.

이틀 전에는 기차에서 내려 바이칼 호수에 갔어요.

Known as the “Blue Eye of Siberia,” it is the deepest and largest freshwater lake in the world.

’시베리아의 푸른 눈’이라고 알려진 그것은 세계에서 가장 깊고 넓은 담수호에요.

When I first saw it, I didn’t know what to say.

그것을 처음 보았을 때 저는 무슨 말을 해야 할지 몰랐어요.

It was so huge and beautiful!

I ate a picnic lunch there and swam in the cold, blue water.

I can’t wait to explore Vladivostok.

어서 빨리 블라디보스토크를 여행하고 싶어요.

From there, I will take a ferry to Japan.

The cuckoo is a bird that makes a sound like its name: “Cuckoo! Cuckoo!”

뻐꾸기는 자신의 이름처럼 ‘뻐꾹! 뻐꾹!’하는 소리를 내는 새이다.

The soft cry might sound friendly and sweet, but cuckoos play a trick on other birds: They lay their eggs in other birds’ nests.

그 부드러운 울음소리는 정답고 달콤하게 들릴지 모르지만, 뻐꾸기는 그들의 알을 다른 새의 둥지에 낳아서 다른 새들을 속이고 있다.

A mother cuckoo lays 20 eggs, placing each one in a different nest.

엄마 뻐꾸기는 20개의 알을 낳고 각각의 알을 서로 다른 둥지에 둔다.

It chooses nests with eggs that are similar in size and color.

엄마 뻐꾸기는 크기와 색깔이 유사한 알들이 있는 둥지를 고른다.

Then it waits until the host bird leaves for food.

The mother cuckoo flies into the bird’s nest, lays its own egg and then quickly flies away.

Not only is the mother cuckoo an unwanted guest, but the baby cuckoo is also a bad visitor.

Cuckoo chicks usually hatch first, and they don’t like to share the nest or food!

새끼 뻐꾸기는 보통 가장 먼저 부화하는데, 그들은 둥지와 먹이를 공유하는 것을 좋아하지 않는다!

Cuckoo chicks are big, so it is easy for them to roll the other eggs and chicks out of the nest with their legs.

새끼 뻐꾸기는 커서, 그들의 다리를 이용하여 다른 알과 새끼들을 쉽게 둥지 밖으로 굴려 내어버린다.

The parents then forget about them and take care of the cuckoo chick.

In Russia, people believe that the cuckoo knows how long a person will live.

If someone hears a cuckoo’s call in the woods, he or she asks, “Cuckoo, cuckoo, how long will I live?”

Saturday morning came.

토요일 오전이 되었다.

The summer was full of life.

여름은 활기로 가득 차 있었다.

Everything was bright and fresh, but…

Tom came outside with a can of white paint and a brush.

His aunt had angrily told him to paint the fence as a punishment for skipping school.

With a sigh, he began to paint.

Soon a boy named Ben came along, eating an apple.

Ben was a mean boy who always teased Tom.

Ben stopped eating the apple and watched Tom, who pretended to love every minute of painting the fence.

Ben started to get more interested.

벤은 점점 흥미가 생기기 시작했다.

He said, “Tom, let me try.”

At last, Tom agreed with a long face, but with a joyous heart.

He sat down to eat the apple while Ben started to work.

Mark Twain is one of America’s best-loved writers.

More serious than The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, it shows the friendship between Huck and Jim during many great adventures.
